The US Department of Homeland Security – along with the Pentagon and FBI – issued a warning to all current and former members of the US Military regarding social media. The warning explains that a serious threat exists for ISIS operatives to exploit social media accounts for information on veterans and military members. This information could then be used to target victims for assassination and torture here in the homeland.
According to a Joint Intelligence Bulletin (JIB) released late on the night of 11/30/2014,
“The FBI recently received reporting indicating individuals overseas are spotting and assessing like-minded individuals who are willing and capable of conducting attacks against current and former U.S.-based members of the United States military”
The JIB also stated, “The FBI and DHS recommend that current and former members of the military review their online social media accounts for any information that might serve to attract the attention of ISIS and its supporters.”
This warning from the US Intelligence Community comes on the heels of its previous warning in October 2014, stating that ISIS may be planning to attack US Law Enforcement officers. That JIB cautioned LEO’s to maintain a higher state of vigilance, citing domestic sympathizers statements indicating elevated potential for “lone wolf” style attacks around the nation.
